I think K1 wins this competition too...But my gut says the JJM story isnt going to be accurately told in the short-term.
I'm encouraged early on by what we are reading about his progress and what that could mean for him here long-term.
But yah, no rift or schisms please...

When we drafted him I thought his worst-case scenario was as the next Darnold, Mayfield, Brees—someone who doesn't get it early, gets bounced around, but eventually settles in and finds a groove. Now I worry that might be his best-case scenario.

First open Vikings OTA reveals clear leader in quarterback competition

The Vikings are having a true competition at the quarterback. It’s not shaping up to be much of a competition.

Based on this week’s OTA session that was open to the media, newcomer Kyler Murray is well ahead of incumbent starter J.J. McCarthy.

Here’s the key quote from Kevin Seifert of ESPN: “Overall, the afternoon was a reminder that McCarthy could continue along the upward trajectory he established at the end of last season -- and still fall well short of matching Murray’s experience, arm talent and potential to make big plays in the passing game.”

Pro football is the ultimate meritocracy. The Vikings lucked into Murray, the first overall pick in 2019. Cut by the Cardinals with more than $30 million in guaranteed money for 2026, the Vikings were able to get Murray — who grew up a Vikings fan — for the league minimum of $1.3 million.

McCarthy has had a fair shake. He has missed too much time due to injury, and availability is absolutely a skill. Also, McCarthy has had issues with accuracy and a fastball-heavy arsenal that keeps the Vikings from using layered passes to fuel the intermediate passing game.

If McCarthy had done well enough in 2025, the Vikings wouldn’t have been looking for another viable starter in 2026. Now, the best player will play.

So far, Murray is on track to be the better of the two. Which will help the Vikings achieve a better outcome than they experienced in McCarthy’s first year as the unquestioned starter.

Now this is great news!

Looking forward to this year with K1 and we'll figure out what to do at QB after the season is over.

I hope JJM has a long-term future right here in MN tbh.

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!

No duh. He was a freaking rookie last year, coming off of a serious injury. This statement was like something Madden would say, "the team who scores the most points, will win the game."

Reading Dillon Bell is catching everything. Super solid in every OTA. Way early and these are just OTAs, but.......he's popping.

At some point, we'll move on from the competition and focus on the winner (Murray), but early indicators are the coaches are very happy with Kyler so far. This is from yesterday and Athletic Vikings beat writer Alec Lewis:

“The fact that he has impressed them behind the scenes with his smarts in terms of absorbing the system, with his accuracy on the field, and with his style with teammates, the Vikings I know have not been surprised at all that it has been as solid and impressive as it has been with Kyler thus far."

Reports are he's very engaged with creating relationships with teammates and motivated. His style is probably the antithesis of McCarthy, more chill and exuding confidence. In any event, a motivated Kyler Murray HAS to give even the most jaded fans some cause for excitement. Fingers crossed.

I'm sure there's truth in this, but it seems odd to have such detailed information after only a few days.
